We can only anticipate what the trip conditions will be prior to the trip; and they are subject to change based on the weather information for that day; therefore, the overall trip rating and the required skills needed to safely attend the trip, may be upgraded on the day of the trip. This eventuality includes the possible cancellation for some or all its participants; or the postponement of a trip for the following day. By signing up for a club trip, the participant assumes the risk that such a cancellation may occur, even as late as on the shoreline. HOC Paddling Trip Rating Tool-2024-02-29 |
| Important Trip Details |
This trip will explore the beutiful landscape of the Geogian Bay region.
We will have a pre-trip meeting in person or virtual to preview potential day trips.
WHAT TO EXPECT REGARDING PADDLES
While our camp sites are in Killbear campground Lighthouse Point A, we might launch from Blind Bay, etc. depending on wind direction and wind speed. Please be aware that in early August, we will experience the thermal effect that could speed up the wind in the afternoons (reaching 30 km/hr 2-3 times a week) and summer thunderstorm where a passing front can briefly spike wind speed (to 40+ km/hr.) So the water might look calm at 8 am with a gentle breeze that could have a 1-meter swell by 2 pm when the wind typically comes from the west or southwest due to the long fetch, August thermal effect, and wave reflection/refraction (due to submerged rock shelves around the peninsula).Even in the shoulder season of May/September, I have experienced 2-foot waves hitting the beach that required intermediate skills to paddle powerfully to punch through the waves, and brace when the waves hit the side of the kayak. We will kayak at least 100 meters away from the beach to avoid the swimmers, making open crossing of 3 meters, and landing on granite rocks for our stops. Of course, we will decide whether to go out based on everyone's comfort level, so please assess your comfort level to deal with these potential conditions.
