This eventuality includes the possible cancellation for some or all its participants; or the postponement of a trip for the following day. By signing up for a club trip, the participant assumes the risk that such a cancellation may occur, even as late as on the shoreline. HOC Paddling Trip Rating Tool-2024-02-29 |
Important Trip Details |
Achary is located in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. It is situated on the eastern side of the park near the shores of Grand Lake. Access to the campground is off of Highway 17, followed by a drive on the Barron Canyon Road.
Note: Access to this campground is on 45 km of gravel road. There is no gas sold at this access point or at the campground. There are no public roads to Achray directly from Highway 60. Cell service at Achray campground is generally limited. There is a limit of two cars per camp site. Parking costs are in addition to camping and will be sorted at the time of the trip.
This trip is 5 days, and 4 nights. We will spend 3 nights at the Achray campsite, followed by an optional night at a family cottage in Petawawa for an additional night at no cost.
Day 1: Travel day, arrive at campsite any time after 1 pm.
Day 2: Grand Lake and Clemow Lake - Optional: a hike to where Tom Thompson painted the Jack Pine in the afternoon or after dinner.
Day 3: The Petroglyphs, Stratton Lake, High Falls to see a natural rock water slide and play!
Day 4: Pack up and drive to the Squirrel Rapids parking lot - Paddle the BarronCanyon. We are renting canoes for this leg of the trip as there is a short portage which would be difficult with kayaks.Canoe rental is NOT included in the trip cost. This will be followed by a short drive and a fairly easy 1 km hike to the peak of the Barron Canyon where you will see a vista of the water system where you just paddled. Travel to the cottage in Petawawa.
