Certified Hike Leader Course

Two-part course

1. Online course at your own pace with an assignment. Three ZOOM sessions (6 hours)

2. One outdoors in-person session (2 hours) 

DATE

  • Start with session 1 on April 12 2022 at 7:00 - 8:00 pm
  • Session 2: April 19 2022, 6:30 - 9:00 pm. Complete your assignment before session 3
  • Session 3: April 26, 6:30 - 9:00 pm
  • Note: All Zoom sessions start sharp on time. The online sessions must be completed successfully before attending the in-person outdoors session. 
  • In-person outdoors session will be held on May 14, 2022 (2.5 hrs)

COURSE OBJECTIVE

  1. To introduce participants to the skills, knowledge and attitudes of a trained hike leader, including appropriate risk management for day hikes where the hike is no more than 2 km from road access.
  2. To provide the prerequisite for the Wilderness Day Hike Leader and Wilderness Trip Hike Leader programs.

* 50% subsidy ($30.00) would be available based on proof of payment, proof of course completion, completion of leading trips/rides in the current season.
Hiking: 4 trips

Paddling: 2 trips

Cycling: 3 rides

Winter Sports: 3 trips

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

  • First Zoom is an introduction that explains the course and gives the participants an opportunity to talk about their outdoor background, what kinds of hikes they like to do and what they want to get out of the course. (1hr) 
  • Second Zoom is a 2.5 hour session to go over Proactive ways to reduce Risk on a Hike. An assignment is given out at this time. 
  • Third 2 1/2 hour session for the participants to share what they determined as part of their assignment as well as specialty hikes. Online course at own pace prior to in-person session.
  • The final session is outdoors to examine backpack contents for a hike leader, car shuttles and practicing scenarios that can occur on a hike.

WHAT YOU RECEIVED

  • A student Manual of the course (electronic copy) which you may print for future reference.
  • Upon successful course completion you receive a badge and a personal certification card which is valid for 5 years.

Pre-Course Assignment

Prepare a hike leader’s backpack for a day hike. Come prepared to share your chosen items.

CANCELLATION

  • If your plans change, please contact the Club Manager at info@haltonoutdoorclub.ca to cancel so that other HOC members may take your spot.
  • The club may re-schedule the in-person session due to bad weather that may impact the safety of participants or cancel due to low attendance.
  • Not refundable unless your spot can be filled from the wait list.

For the in-person sessions please bring

  • Mask
  • Pen, pencil, paper
  • Wear comfortable clothes and hiking shoes
  • Bring poles
  • Water, lunch, snacks
  • Bring your own backpack and its contents including your First Aid Kit, etc.

Covid-19 Safety Guidelines

Covid recommendations will be observed. All participants must wear masks at times physical distancing of 6 feet is not possible.
